In these pages, the one word "autism" takes the place of the more complex "autism spectrum disorder" and its short form "ASD."

MY QUESTIONS & MY PURPOSE

What will take place when deep-feeling contact is done with persons who are autistic? Will it make them better or make them worse or do nothing at all? My purpose is to get answers to these questions.

Over 30 years back, I came across an operation that has great power to make diseases of mind better. (That is, the operation is robust.) The operation's name is deep-feeling contact. But for young boys and girls and their mother or father, this operation NEVER makes use of body-to-body touching between persons. And the operation takes only seconds to do. All this has the sound of science fiction but it is nonetheless true.

For autism comes from stopping the development deep feelings within the first six months after birth. And these very young deep feelings seem to make war on anyone nearby. After deep-feeling contact, these same deep feelings undergo growth and become a friend who gives help to everyone living and working with the person whose autism has been changed by deep-feeling contact.

The trouble with today's ways of making autism better is that they are meager. That is, today's ways have a high price in time, work, money and danger but they give back only a small profit in changed behavior of the autistic person.

Four Errors in Our Reasoning about Autism

Our ideas about autism are clouded by four errors in our reasoning. Please see the page about these four errors.

Final Common Pathway:
An Old Way of Reasoning about Autism

I put forward the suggestion that we go back to an old way of reasoning about autism. That old way is named the final common pathway. Make use of this connection to see a page about final common pathways.

LAOTZU, 51
Existence having born them
And fitness bred them,
While matter varied their forms
And breath empowered them,
All created things render, to the existence and fitness they depend on,
An obedience
Not commanded but of course.
And since this is the way existence bears issue
And fitness raises, attends,
Shelters, feeds and protects,
Do you likewise:
Be parent, not possessor,
Attendant, not master,
Be concerned not with obedience but with benefit,
And you are at the core of living.

SECOND OPINIONS OF AUTISM

[second opinions of autism] Martha G. Welch Center This way of working with autism keeps limits on the autistic person's physical motions until he or she gives up fighting against the limits and lets a deeper-than-physical connection come into existence between himself or herself and the mother or father.
The Son-Rise Program This way of working with autism makes a connection with the autistic person by joining in his or her private point of view. The helper gets into the autistic person's private point of view by doing the very same things that the autistic person does.
Facilitated Communication Institute This way of working with autism makes a connection with the autistic person by letting him or her take over part of the helper's body so that he or she gets his or her ideas out by using that body part, frequently the hand.
